내가 사는 핌블에서 시티로 나가려면 지하철을 타야한다. 지하철을 타면서 시드니의 정경을 항상 바라보는데, 그중 시드니를 대표하는 다리로 하버브리지를 빼놓을 수 없다. 하버브리지는 1932년에 개통된 철제 아치교이다. 그 당시에는 세계에서 가장 긴 다리였다고 한다. 8년이라는 장시간동안 1,500명 이상의 사람들이 공사를 하여 1,149m 길이의 다리를 만들었단다.

하버브리지는 아치모양이라서 ‘옷걸이(The Coat Hanger)’라 불리기도 하며, 무엇보다 세계에서 가장 큰 규모인 새해맞이 불꽃놀이로 유명하다. 나는 2011년 12월31일 마지막날, 엄마와 함께 하버브리지로 달려갔다. 그 유명한 불꽃놀이기 보기 위해서이다. 도시 곳곳은 축제의 분위기이고, 한해를 마무리하는 사람들의 흥분으로 가득 차 있었다.

드디어 폭죽이 시작!! 세상에서 이렇게 길고, 아름답고, 화려한 불꽃은 처음보았다. 엄마와 나는 곧 한국으로 돌아가야하기에 이 불꽃이 더 아름답게 느껴졌을수도 있을 것이다. 언제 또 다시 하버브리지에 와서 불꽃을 볼수 있을까.

이렇게 호주의 아름다움과 대표 랜드마크로서 골드코스트를 빼놓을 수는 없을 것이다. ‘골코’라고도 약칭해서 부르기도 한다.

런던에서 비행기를 타고 퀸즈랜드주 골드코스트에 갔다. 골드코스트는 퀸즐랜드주 남동해안 쪽으로 30km에 걸쳐 있고, 주도(州都) 브리즈번의 남쪽 교외에 위치하는 해변 관광휴양도시이다. 끝없이 펼쳐지는 해변에 할 말을 잃었다.

그런데 이상하게 해변에 그물을 길게 쳐놓아서 안전을 엄청 중요하게 생각하는 것 같았다. 엄마는 이 그물은 수영할 때 상어한테 물릴 것을 대비하여 치는 안전그물이라고 하였다. 더 재미있는 것은 바다에 깃발 같은 것을 꽂아놓아서 수심을 체크해놓은 것이다. 관광객들에게 수심이 얼마나 깊은지를 경고하는 표시인 것 같았다.

우리는 드림 월드, 씨월드, 워너브라더스 무비 월드를 방문하면서 테마관광을 즐겼다. 수영은 기본이고 다양한 액티비티들. 무엇보다도 드림월드에서 레일을 탔는데, 갑자기 레일이 끊어지더니 뚝 떨어지면서 아래층 레일로 연결해서 기차가 가는 것이다. 정말 간이 콩알만해졌다. 알고보니 사고가 아니고 말그대로 놀랄만한 액티비티였던 것이다. 그 외에도 해적선을 타고 스모그속 후룸라이드와 같은 놀이동산 배 등 정말 신기한 것이 많았다. 그리고 워너브라더스에서는 ‘베트맨’ 캐릭터가 우리를 반겨주면서 많은 이벤트를 하고 있었다.

정말 재미있는 하루였다. 나중에 엄마는 골드코스트 관광할 때 운전이 너무 힘들다고 하였다. 왜냐면 우리나라와는 다르게 렌트카가 네비게이션이 없고 모두 지도를 보면서 이동해야했기에 등줄기에서 식은땀이 났다고 했다.

호주에서 정말 다양한 경험을 해보는 것 같다. 어쨌건 재미있는 나라이다.

Part Ⅴ. Harbor Bridge and Gold Coast

  I have to take the subway to get out of Pimble, where I live, to the city. While taking the subway, I always look at the scenery of Sydney, and one of them is Harbor Harbor, which represents Sydney. Harbor Bridge is an iron arch bridge that opened in 1932. It was said to have been the longest bridge in the world at that time. Over a long period of eight years, more than 1,500 people have built and built a 1,149m long bridge.

  The Harbor Bridge is also called “The Coat Hanger” because of its arch shape, and most of all, it is famous as the world's largest fireworks display for the New Year. On the last day of December 31, 2011, I ran to Harbor Bridge with my mother. To see the famous fireworks display. Everywhere in the city is a festive atmosphere, filled with excitement from people who end the year.

  Firecrackers are finally starting! I have never seen such a long, beautiful and colorful fireworks in the world. This fireworks may have been more beautiful because my mom and I had to go back to Korea soon. When can I come back to Harbor Bridge to see the fireworks?

  You can't miss the Gold Coast as Australia's beauty and representative landmark. It is also called abbreviated as ‘Golko’.

  I flew from London to Gold Coast, Queensland. Gold Coast is a beach tourism and recreational city located 30 km southeast of Queensland, in the southern suburbs of Brisbane, the capital. I have lost words on the endless beach.

  But strangely, it seemed to me that safety was very important because I put a long net on the beach. The mother said that this net is a safety net to be hit in case of a shark bite when swimming. Even more interesting is to check the water depth by putting a flag on the sea. It seemed to be a sign to warn tourists of how deep the water is.

  We enjoyed theme tours while visiting Dream World, Sea World, and Warner Brothers Movie World. Swimming is basic and I was very interested in various activities. Above all, I rode the rail at Dream World, and suddenly the rail broke down and fell, dropping and connecting to the rail downstairs. I was really surprised. It turned out that it wasn't an accident, but it was an amazing activity. In addition, I remember riding a pirate ship and wandering through the smog. And at the Warner Brothers, the 'Betman' character welcomed us and had many events.

  It was a really fun day. Later, she said that driving was too difficult when sightseeing on the Gold Coast. Because, unlike Korea, the rental car has no navigation, and everyone had to move while looking at the map.

  It seems to be a very diverse experience in Australia. Anyway, it is a fun country.
