2018년 여름, 엄마와 나는 화련의 태로각협곡(太魯閣峽谷)을 찾았다.

이 협곡은 해발 고도 2,000m 이상의 험준한 산들로 둘러싸인 대리석 협곡으로, 중앙 산맥에서 태평양으로 흐르는 격류가 만들어 낸 타이완에서 가장 경이로운 자연의 산물이라고 한다. 즉, 태로각의 협곡은 침식 작용에 의해서 대리석과 화강암의 산이 강의 흐름을 따라 깎여져 좁은 협곡을 이룬 독특한 지형이라고 한다.

우리가 버스를 타고 도착했을 때는 비가 부슬부슬 내리고 있었다. 뾰족하고 높은 산 사이로 좁은 길들이 이어지고, 아래에 흐르는 강 위에는 대리석 기둥들이 솟아있었다. 산속에 뚫린 터널을 비를 맞고 걸어간다. 누군가가 그랬다. ‘아시아의 그랜드캐년’이라고.

정말 감탄하지 않을 수 없다. 애매랄드 빛의 물 색깔은 너무 아름다움 그 자체였다. 나는 미국의 크랜드캐년을 가보지는 않았지만, 세계적으로 엄청난 협곡이 장관을 이루는 곳이라고알고 있다.

그런데 걸어서 올라갈수록 물의 색깔이 회색으로 보였다. 바로 석회물인 것이다. 물이 잿빛으로 흐르는 것이 너무 신기했다.

우리는 이동하여 태로각협곡 투어 셔틀버스 승강장에서 계곡 위로 난 다리쪽으로 걸어가다가 사카당 트레일로 내려가는 입구가 나오면 계단으로 내려가면 된다. 사카당 트레일에서 사카당은 우리나라 말로 어금니라는 뜻을 가지고 있다고 하며, 사카당천을 따라 만들어진 아름다운 산책로이다. 입구에서 전망대까지는 약 1.1km로 한시간 반정도가 소요되며, 왼쪽 옆의 계곡 장관을 보면서 시원한 트레킹을 즐길 수 있었다. 아, 정말 시원하고 아름다운 무릉도원이 따로 없는 것 같았다.

이래서 여행을 하나보다. 조용한 산책로를 걸으면서, 시원한 바람을 쐬며 계곡의 아름다움까지 느낄 수 있는 자연과 내가 하나가 되는 느낌이었다.

Part 2: Going to Hualien Taro-Gorge

  In the summer of 2018, my mother and I visited Taro-Gorge of Hualien.

  This canyon is a marble canyon surrounded by rugged mountains with an altitude of 2,000 meters above sea level. It is also said to be one of Taiwan's most amazing natural products created by the torrent flowing from the central mountains to the Pacific Ocean. In other words, the canyon of the Tarotak is a unique terrain formed by narrowing the mountains of marble and granite along the flow of the river by erosion.

  When we arrived by bus it was raining little by little. Narrow roads lead through the sharp, high mountains, and marble columns rise above the river below. We walked through the rain tunnels in the mountains. Someone called it the Grand Canyon of Asia.

  Really I could not help but admire.

The color of the emerald water was so beautiful. I haven't been to the Grand Canyon of the United States, but I know it's home to some of the world's greatest canyons.

  But as I walked up, the color of the water looked gray. It is lime. It was so marvelous that the water flowed gray.

  We will move from the Taro Gorge Tour Shuttle Bus Stop to the bridge over the valley and down the stairs to the Sakadang Trail. On the Sakadang Trail, Sakadang is said to mean molars in Korean. It is a beautiful walk along Sakadangcheon. From the entrance, it takes about an hour and a half to reach the observation deck, about 1.1km. I was able to enjoy a cool trek while looking down the left side valley view. Oh, it seems that there is no really cool and beautiful paradise.

  I thought I was traveling because of these feelings. Walking along the quiet promenade, I could feel the beauty of the valley while breathing a cool breeze.
