광주제일고 2학년 임진우

외할머니는 건강하지 않으셨다. 그래서 엄마는 항상 외할머니를 모시고 목욕탕, 병원, 식당, 쇼핑센터 등 무거운 휠체어를 밀고 종횡무진 다니셨던 기억이 있다.

어린 나였지만, 엄마가 할머니께 참 잘하는 모습을 보고, 몸이 불편한 사람들을 보면 나도 그냥 지나칠 수가 없다. 왜냐면 그 누군가는 손길이 필요하기 때문이다.

고등학교 2학년이기에 시간적인 한계가 있어, 많은 봉사활동을 다니는데는 한계가 있다. 그래서 나는 짬짬이 한국 도박문제관리센터, 요양병원, 동화책 번역 봉사활동 등을 진행하기로 마음먹었다.

지난 2019년 5월, 7월, 12월, 나는 ‘한국도박문제관리 광주센터’에서 도박예방교육을 통해 우리사회의 도박문제나 알코올 문제와 같은 사회적 문제를 상기해보는 계기가 되었고, 중독된 사람들에 대한 따뜻한 손길이 필요하다는 것을 알게 되었다. 또한 2019년 12월 16일, 광주 소재 요양병원을 방문하여 소외된 우리 이웃인 노인분들을 위해 말벗, 청소, 안마 등 나의 따뜻한 손길을 필요로 하는 이웃들을 위해 봉사활동을 실시했다.

뿐만 아니라, 2019년 10월 20일, 헌혈의 집의 봉사를 통해 지구상에 피 한방울 때문에 생사를 오고가는 사람들을 생각하며, 봉사를 통해 새로운 생명을 살릴 수 있다는 생각에 뿌듯함을 느꼈다.

이 외에도 내가 좋아하는 영어를 활용하여 영어 동화책(A Day at Miss Lilly’s, Splat the Cat, New shoes of JUNE, Monster Parade, Dixie and the School Trip,Dixie and the School Trip, The Trouble with Samson)번역을 하는데, 내가 한 번역은 지역 아동센터에 전달되어 아이들에게 기부된다고 한다. 이는 영어책을 읽고 싶어도 영어를 잘 모르는 어린이들을 위해 재능기부를 하는 것이다. 이와 함께 국제청소년정보원(IYIS)으로서 미국무부 교육자료 번역을 맡아 활동하기도 하였다.

우리사회에는 소외된 이웃들이 있다. 이들은 따뜻한 손길을 필요로 하고 있다. 점점 각박해지고 이기적인 성향과 분위기가 퍼져가는 상황에서, 우리 이웃들에게 온정의 손길을 뻗는다면 이 사회는 더욱더 행복해지지 않을까?

Someone needs a touch.

  My grandmother was not healthy. So I remember that my mom always carried my grandmother in a wheelchair. For example, baths, hospitals, restaurants, shopping centers.

  I was young, but when I see my mom doing well with my grandmother, and I see people with discomfort, I can't pass it. Because someone needs a touch.

  There is a time limit because I am a sophomore in high school, so there is a limit to many volunteer activities. So I decided to go to Korea's Gambling Problem Management Center, a nursing hospital, and a storybook volunteer service.

  In May, July, and December of 2019, I was reminded of social problems such as gambling problems and alcohol problems through gambling prevention education at Gwangju Center for Korean Gambling Problem Management. I realized that I needed a warm touch. In addition, on December 16, 2019, I visited the elderly nursing home in Gwangju and volunteered for the neighbors who needed my warm hands such as horses, cleaning, and massage for the elderly who are marginalized.

  In addition, on October 20, 2019, through the service of the Blood Donation House, I thought about people who live and die because of a drop of blood on the planet, and felt that they could save new life through service.

  In addition to this, because I like English, English fairy tales such as A Day at Miss Lilly's, Splat the Cat, New shoes of JUNE, Monster Parade, Dixie and the School Trip, Dixie and the School Trip, The Trouble with Samson Has been translated. These translations are said to be delivered to local children's centers and donated to children. This is a talent donation for children who do not know English well even if they want to read English books. At the same time, I was the International Youth Information Service (IYIS), where I was responsible for translating US Department of State educational materials.

  There are alienated neighbors in our society. They need a warm touch. Society is becoming increasingly pervasive and spreading selfish tendencies and moods. Wouldn't this society be happier if we reached out to our neighbors with warmth?
